Since spring has sprung we have the tendency to find any reason to go outside. On June 15th your child and you should participate in celebrating Fly a Kite Day. This is a very special day to spend some quality time outdoors with your child.
The History Behind Making A Kite Day
When you tell your child that June 15th is Fly A Kite Day, your child may wonder how did this holiday begin. To be honest, I have never heard of this holiday until doing some searching on the Internet. This holiday was designed to honor Benjamin Franklin in regards to one of his experiments. On June 1752 Benjamin Franklin took a small kite and attached a metal key to it to find out whether or not lightening is a "stream of electrical charged air" . In addition to this experiment, this holiday enhances awareness to society on the many uses and benefits of kites.
Making a Kite
On Fly a Kite Day, you have the option to either buy a kite or make a kite with your child. If your child and you decide to make a kite, don't worry. There are many ways to make one. Some people use construction paper, string, crayons, markers, a wooden dowel, fabric, etc. Make sure before you make one to look around your house for some of these items. It will save you money and time. Most kites have a diamond shape for the body kite, but don't worry about limiting yourself to one shape. It is important to have your child's input and ask him or her to help in making the kite. There are so many different styles of kites that your child can choose from. Make sure to choose a nice warm day with a slight breeze. Fly a Kite Day is not only a holiday that celebrates Benjamin Franklin's experiment, but also realize their use and beauty. Your child will enjoy make his or her own kite, but more importantly spending that extra quality time with you.
