Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that is celebrated many for eight consecutive days.  This December Hanukkah will be celebrated from December 22nd through the 29th.

How it Began
Many people know that Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days and that it involves having to light candles.  There is more to this holiday than this.  Hanukkah or the Festival of Lights is a holiday for the Jewish community to remember and celebrate the victory that the Jewish people had over the Syrians in 165 B.C.E.

How Hanukkah is Celebrated

Hanukkah is celebrated in a variety of ways.  Many people automatically think of the lighting of the candles for eight days to celebrate Hanukkah, but it can also be celebrated by the Dreidel (or a top), Hanukkah Gelt, and food.  Listed below is information for each:

  • Dreidel - A top that has a Hebrew letter on each side.  It is used to play a game where individuals can earn candy or coins.
  • Hanukkah Gelt - Real or chocolate coins that are given to children as presents.
  • Food - Latkes or potato pancakes as well as sufganiyot or jelly filled donuts are delicious foods that are made to celebrate Hanukkah.

Hanukkah Websites

Even if your family does not celebrate this holiday, it is important that we teach our children what this holiday is about so they can have a better understanding as well as be able to show respect for other's beliefs.  Listed below are some websites that provide further information as well as activities that you can share with your children:

Hanukkah is a holiday that celebrates the victory that the Jews had over the Syrians as well as remember what they have overcome.  It is also a time where families come together to appreciate one another, just as it is with all celebrations during the month of December.
