Many families consider going on a vacation when summer time arrives. If, however, you have a newborn or infant you may be rethinking this idea. On a daily basis you are in charge of providing a loving and nurturing environment as well as the basic care: feedings, changing diapers, etc.  You can still provide all of these when traveling this summer.  You may be wondering how you can make this summer's vacation a successful one.

It is important to be prepared when traveling with a little one.  There are many things that you will need to take with you, but try not to over do it.

Infant Items for Summer Vacations

Listed below are some items that you may want to consider in taking with you on your summer vacation:

  • Car seat
  • Diapers
  • Wipes
  • Diaper Cream
  • Formula (If applicable) /Baby food
  • Bottles/Bottle Liners (If applicable)
  • Baby bibs (for those that are eating baby food)
  • Clothing (i.e. onesies, one piece outfits, pajamas, sun hat/sunglasses, socks, light jacket, etc.)
  • Sunscreen
  • Medicines
  • List of emergency contacts (including infant's family physician/pediatrician, specialists, etc.)
  • Bedding
  • Pack-in-Play
  • Cloth Diapers (can be used as burp rags)
  • Blankets
  • Baby soap, wash cloth, and towel
  • Laundry Soap (especially if your infant has sensitive skin)
  • Baby Stroller
  • Toys/Books (especially those that your child is attached to)
  • Portable swing (only if you feel that it is needed)
  • Backpack/Diaper Bag

This list may seem overwhelming, but remember that it is important to be prepared.  You don't necessarily need to take everything on the list; only what pertains to your child.

Traveling Tips

Now that you have some ideas on what to pack for your infant, you may be wondering how to make your family vacation a successful one.  Listed below are some traveling tips on how to have a wonderful family summer vacation with an infant:

  • Try to stick with your child's schedule (i.e. eating, changing diapers, nap time)
  • Provide an opportunity at the end of the day to rest
  • Make sure that you have your emergency contact list and health insurance card with you
  • Take a first aid kit with you
  • If you are driving to your destination, make frequent stops as needed
  • Make sure to have two sets of diapers, wipes, bottles and formula (if applicable)/baby food with you (one set with you in the diaper bag/backpack and one set in your suitcase)
  • Make sure to have your child's medicine in your diaper bag/backpack (that way you will have easy access, especially if it is for emergency situations - asthma, seizures, allergic reactions, etc.)
  • Have fun
  • Relax

After packing for your family summer vacation with your infant and following some of the tips listed above, you will be able to make it your vacation destination.  Not only will you make it to your vacation destination with your infant, but your family and you will be able to enjoy it.
