Christma s is a holiday that is celebrated by many families on December 25th. This holiday is unique in the sense that families can celebrate it due to its religious history and cultural beliefs.
Christmas' Past
The holiday of Christmas can be a time for families of the Christian faith to celebrate their religious beliefs. Those that are Christian celebrate this holiday to celebrate Jesus birth. Many families have learned the story where Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem in Israel for Mary to give birth to Jesus. When they arrived there was no room at the inn, so they had to stay at a stable. Later the shepherds and wise men came to see Jesus. The wise men gave gifts to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
Christmas' Culture
Many families continue to celebrate Christmas by remembering the birth of Jesus, but many other traditions have developed in addition to this. Some families will celebrate Christmas in the following ways:
- Exchanging gifts with one another
- Prepare for Santa Claus (i.e. children may write lists of things they would like, place a plate of goodies and glass of milk on Christmas eve)
- Attend Christmas church plays and programs
- Attend Christmas church services
- Visit family members
- Share a large meal with family
- Volunteer at church, food pantries, etc.
- Mail out Christmas cards to family and friends
- Make sweets to share with loved ones
- Display Christmas lights at their homes
- Visit Christmas lights in community
- Decorate a Christmas tree (real or artificial)
- Place mistletoe above an entryway
- Hang stockings above a fireplace
It is important to remember that people will celebrate the holiday of Christmas in a variety of ways. Each family may have their own traditions and beliefs in how they celebrate this holiday. The most important thing is to remember that it is important to share your family's Christmas' beliefs with your children regardless if they are religious or cultural beliefs.
