As parents we enjoy seeing our children blossom from infants to toddlers.  With this transformation our toddlers become more active as well as curious. This high energy level and curiosity that our little toddlers seem to have bring us not only joy, but also wonderment in how to go on long family vacations or even day trips during the summer.  This is a difficult task in itself.

Items for Summer Vacations & Day Trips
The first step to making sure that not only you reach your destination, but also to enjoy your vacation with your toddler is by making sure that you have some of the items listed below.

  • Car seat
  • Diapers/Pull-Ups/Undies (Depending on where your toddler is in regards to potty training)
  • Healthy snacks and drinks (i.e. crackers, fresh fruit, bottle water, 100% juice boxes)
  • Sippy cups
  • Toddler Utensils (if needed)
  • Special food - If your child has food allergies
  • Clothing (i.e. shirts/sweatshirts, pants/shorts, pajamas, sun hat/sunglasses, socks, light jacket, etc.)
  • Swimsuit/swim trunks
  • Sunscreen
  • Medicines
  • First aid kit
  • List of emergency contacts (including infant's family physician/pediatrician, specialists, etc.)
  • Special blanket, pillow, and/or stuffed animal
  • Laundry soap/hair shampoo/body shampoo (especially if your infant has sensitive skin)
  • Baby stroller (if your child easily is tired from long walks)
  • Favorite toys or books (especially those that your child is attached to)
  • DVDs - If your vehicle is able to play movies
  • Backpack

This list of items to take on your family's summer vacations and/or day trips is a recommendation.  Remember to take only what you need, but to also remember to keep your child's needs in mind (i.e. medical conditions, food allergies, etc.).

Tips for Traveling with a Toddler

Now that you have a list with recommended items on what to take on your next summer vacation and/or day trip, you may be wondering how to make either a successful trip.  Listed below are some helpful tips on how to travel with your toddler on a summer vacation trip and/or day trip:

  • Try to stick with your child's schedule (i.e. eating, sleeping, restroom/bathroom breaks)
  • If possible travel during your child's morning or afternoon nap time.
  • If you do travel during your child's nap time, make sure that your son or daughter has a window shade
  • Bring toys, books, etc. that are age appropriate
  • If your child is old enough to color, bring coloring books and crayons
  • Take audio tapes with stories and music on them
  • If your vehicle is able to play DVDs, take several DVDs that are age appropriate for your child
  • Make sure to take breaks for bathroom and meals
  • When you stop for breaks, try to find an opportunity where your toddler can run (i.e. fastfood indoor playlands, parks, etc.)

It can be quite an adventure when going on a summer vacation and/or day trip with a toddler, but can become a memorable one if you are prepared and consider some of the tips listed above.
