If you have a child that is school age, kindergarten through sixth grade, an option for childcare to consider is a before and after school program. This is an ideal placement for school age children because it allows them to interact with children their age and possibly know through school. Before and after school programs can take place in schools, YMCAs, YWCAs, recreational facilities, and other community based buildings. To find out what the many benefits and disadvantages to sending your school-aged child to before and after school programs are, read the lists below.
Benefits:
- Location (Especially if your child is able to go to a before and after school program at their school)
- Flexible hours (Many open as early as 6:30AM and close by 6:30 PM)
- Allow your child to interact with children his/her age.
- Most programs provide free meals and/or snacks (covered in the cost)
- Fun activities that are age-appropriate
- Most before and after school programs have well-trained staff with good staff to child ratio
- If not located in child's school, transportation is provided to and from your child's school
- Some have high cost compared to in-home day care (i.e. in-home daycare about $50/week vs. before and after school program $125.00+/week)
- Some are not opened during no school days.
- Some will close early on early-outs due to weather situations (i.e. snow storm, ice, etc.).
There are many benefits and disadvantages to sending your child to before and after school programs. It is important to consider all of your options when choosing the right childcare provider for your child. If a before and after school program is a possibility, make sure to look at both the benefits and disadvantages to sending your child to one.
