It happens to us all sometimes, right? Age, excessive eating or inactivity (or all of the above) can all contribute to weight gain in ourselves as well as the ones we love. So what can you do if the one you love needs to lose a few pounds? How do you tell your wife or husband, boyfriend or girlfriend that they need to lose a few pounds?
Be Tactful, Buy a Scale
Ideally, you have good communication with the person you love and should have some clues about how to go about this without getting an icy stare or a slap on the face. Rather than just saying, “Honey, I love you, but you need to lose weight”, you might consider getting a new bathroom scale. Talk about the new scale when it arrives. There are some very cool new models that tell you your weight as well as your BMI and just purchasing this item gives you a platform from which to launch your campaign.
Reverse Psychology
Another way to discuss weight loss with your loved one is to talk about yourself. Even if you haven’t gained weight, consider a little white lie. Tell your significant other that you have put on a few pounds and want to lose a few by increasing your activity. This small act of reverse psychology opens the door for your mate to discuss their own weight loss plans or to at least acknowledge that they have a few pounds to lose.
Less Talk, More Action
Instead of ever even mentioning it, why not just instigate more exercise with your loved one? Call them and ask them to take walks with you, or invite them to the gym to work out together. There is nothing that brings a couple closer together than getting a little hot and sweaty at the gym!
Discuss Nutrition
Maybe you’ve noticed your mate is consuming a lot of junk food or soda. You could bring this up circuitously by mentioning how you heard a news story about the dangers of too much soda, salt, sugar or junk food. You might even talk about SparkPeople, a wonderful, free website where you can track your exercise minutes and food intake.
Put Your Cooking Where Your Mouth Is…
Consider cooking healthy meals for your significant other and serving low-fat desserts. After all, nothing says I Love You more than cooking a nutritious and delicious meal.
