All About Remote Viewing : Open in New Window

Imagine a person sitting in a room, but being able to describe the details and features of a location on the other side of the world or in another part of the universe. Or imagine a person being able to see and describe the details of an event that happened long ago. This is what is known as the paranormal phenomena of remote viewing. Remote viewing is closely related to the parapsychology or psychic aspects of clairvoyance and telepathy, and yet there are some distinct differences. But before we look at those differences and explore this subject a little more deeply, first we will look at the history of remote viewing.

History

Beginning in 1971, psychic Ingo Swann took part in remote viewing experiments with the Stanford Research Project (SRI) that involved the remote viewer, a distant target, the perceptions of the viewer and positive confirmation of the perceptions. Not long after this, the positive outcomes of these experiments drew the attention of the United States government. This was during the time of the Cold War and tensions were high between the United States and the Soviet Union. So, for this reason, remote viewing was seen as a way to gather information or to remotely spy upon other countries. During this time, the U.S. military and the CIA developed remote viewing programs under such names as Star Gate and Sun Streak. Many examples of this now de-classified information was shown to have offered highly detailed and accurate information about distant buildings and facilities. This was the more analytical side of remote viewing, but after it became better known in the general community, remote viewing began to take on a metaphysical aspect.

So, you may be wondering, how exactly does remote viewing happen? Although no one can say exactly how it works the theory is that remote viewing is a way of tapping and accessing information that is available in the collective unconscious mind or what is sometimes referred to as the Universal Mind.

Isn't remote viewing the same as Astral Projection?

Although remote viewing is somewhat related to astral projection, it's not actually the same. Remote viewing differs in that it is not considered an out of body experience; it is a mental projection, rather than a spiritual one.

Also, during astral projection a person may see colors, forms or beings (such as spiritual guides) that they would not see in everyday, earthly existence. But during remote viewing a person will see the same objects, colors and forms that they would see during their normal physical awareness.

It’s also important to note that remote viewing is not a meditative or dream state. During a remote viewing session, the viewer is always alert and awake. Rather than delving deeply into the mind or venturing out on spiritual planes of existence, a remote viewer is mentally projecting upward and outward. Remote viewing can be seen as having some of the qualities of astral projection and other psychic phenomena such as telepathy and clairvoyance, but it is considered to be in a category of its own.

Does a person need psychic abilities in order to practice remote viewing?

No, a person doesn’t have to be psychic or have any particular paranormal ability such as clairvoyance, although these may be helpful. Remote viewing is looked upon more as a learned skill that anyone can do and there are many courses offered, both free and commercial, that can teach people these skills. Although it is said that anyone can learn remote viewing, some people may find it easier to learn than others may and some may not be able to learn it at all.

Can remote viewing enhance my spiritual journey?

While remote viewing is technically not a spiritual tool, it can have spiritual aspects to it.  While some people use remote viewing purely as an analytical tool, there are many others who see it as a way to help them achieve greater mindfulness. A way to observe what is going on in the world and the universe, and to feel a greater sense of connection with these places in their mind, body and spirit.

As with any type of paranormal phenomena there are skeptics who say that remote viewing doesn’t exist. But then again there are many people who find it to be an enriching and mind expanding experience.
