The unco nditional love and affection that pets bring to us is something that is truly remarkable. The bond between owner and pet can be so strong that at times unexplainable events can occur. Such as dog or cat finding its way back after being lost far from home. Or a pet behaving in a nervous manner moments before a natural disaster, such as an earthquake, occurs. But do animals really possess some type of psychic ability? Or, because animal senses such as sight, smell and hearing are so acute, are they picking up subtle cues from their owners?

These questions continue to be debated. While psychics and many pet owners tend to believe the possibility of psychic abilities in animals, scientists tend to be skeptical.  One person who believes that animals have psychic abilities is author Rupert Sheldrake. In his book Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home, he offers theories that he bases on extensive research.  One of his conclusions is that some pets have such strong connections with their owners, what he calls morphic fields, that the pets automatically sense when their owners are returning home.

Author Richard Webster takes it a step further in his book Is Your Pet Psychic? Developing Psychic Communication With Your Pet. In the book, he offers exercises that help create a stronger psychic connection between an owner and their pet. Whether these actually work or not may depend purely upon one's personal interpretations and beliefs.

Some scientific research has been done on this subject in the past, such as French scientific experiments showing that rats who were selected to die would react beforehand which, the scientists believed, showed they were able to foretell the future.

In the 1950's Duke laboratories did research known as ANPSI, a project that studied the concept of psychic abilities in animals. The research was broken down into five categories and covered such things as an animal's knowledge of danger toward their master from a distance and the anticipation of an owner's return. The studies verified documented cases of animals having amazing homing abilities and even documented cases of precognition, or the knowledge of an event before it happens. However it was not able to prove exactly how these abilities were possible.

But whether it can be proven or not, the idea of our pets having psychic abilities is certainly an intriguing one. The empathy and connection they share with their masters is probably something that can never be explained. For many people who truly believe in a psychic connection between humans and pets, there is no need to have such proof.
