Your spirit is the part of you that makes you your own unique self. If is also the part of you that has a connection with the Divine and is the seat of your life force, creativity and inner wisdom. Think of your spirit as a warm, vibrant flame that needs to be carefully tended in order to retain its brilliancy. This tending and nurturing is essential in our everyday lives and there are many ways in which to nurture your spirit. Meditation, prayer and various forms of sacred ritual are common ways to nurture your inner spirit, but there are also many other ways that can keep this vibrant light within you burning brightly.

There is one simple way to nurture your spirit, which is often overlooked in the busyness of life. This simple way is being fully in the moment, or what is referred to in Buddhism as Vipassana. Most of our time is normally spent with our minds either thinking about what we need to do or what we have already done. But to be fully in the moment is to be fully present and aware. This helps us to not only achieve better focus, but to also gain pleasure, wisdom and a stronger sense of place. Being fully in the moment brings us better awareness of the world, of others and of our selves. This can be achieved through even the simplest of tasks from taking a walk to washing the dishes. When you are in the moment you let yourself feel the sensations, tastes, sounds and sights of what you are doing without all the inner jangle of thoughts and analysis. Being fully in the moment fosters a sense of connection with the world, with time and place. It strengthens your spirit and allows true joy and peace to enter.

One method of helping you to be fully in the moment is to look at the world through the eyes of a child. When you look at small children playing you will notice that they go about it with a strong sense of focus. To them, all that matters is what they are doing in that moment and discovery, playfulness and creativity are often part of the mix. At least once a day spend some time looking at your world through the eyes of a child, which means noticing the details of the moment without analyzing them, feeling the sensations of the moment and letting the joys and discovery of the moment fill your spirit. For instance, when was the last time you watched a sunset? The next time you watch the setting sun notice the colors in the sky, feel the warm sensation of the sun’s rays or the cool touch of the air. Breathe in the scents and hear the sounds that are around you. Let your spirit drink in that moment and accept any feelings or insights for what they are. Spend some time each day being fully in the moment and with practice it will become easier to achieve. Be aware, be more fully alive and let the flame of your spirit grow.

BlissIt's so true that one needs to learn to be more fully in the moment in order for the spirit to become more enlightened. There is much Divine wisdom all around us and within us that is ready to be tapped into. Very nice article.

Ron Frazer, Ph.D.This article, as are all your articles, is really beautifully written, well-balanced and helpful. For people who want to think more about being in the moment, Eckhart Tolle's book, The Power of Now, might be an inspiration.
