As well known as meditation may be, there are still a lot of myths and misconceptions associated with it, especially in the Western world. These misconceptions end up keeping people away from what is in fact a very healthy spiritual practice. Let's go over some of the most common meditation myths along with the actual truths.
I'd have to sit in the lotus position
If you think you need to twist your legs in a pretzel in order to meditate don't worry, this isn't the case. It's possible to meditate while sitting comfortably in a chair, kneeling or lying down. Find the position that's most comfortable for you and go from there.
I don't meditate because it's a religious practice
Even though many forms of meditation are based on spiritual traditions such as Buddhism, meditation is not a religious practice. You don't have to follow a specific religion, or place your faith in any particular deity, in order to meditate.
Meditation is just relaxation, and I have other ways to relax
Because meditation is so often connected with stress management, it can be mistaken as a form of relaxation. But even though it's important to release tension in order to meditate effectively, it's more involved than that. Meditation is a practice; a way to train the mind, be aware and gain insight, not just a way to relax.
Meditation will make me become detached from my feelings
Meditation is not a form of self-denial or a way to escape your emotions. Instead, it teaches you to face your true feelings and work with them. There are even some forms of meditation that work to cultivate empathy and compassion for others.
Only people with incredible powers of concentration can meditate
Anyone can learn to meditate, but it takes practice. Meditation involves turning your attention inward and anyone can do this. You just need to take the time to practice every day, even if it's just for a few minutes.
Remember that meditation is a very personal experience, so you will want to find the meditation method that is right for you. With time, practice and patience you will begin to experience the many benefits of meditation.
