A séance is a ritual that is conducted as a way to communicate with the spirit world. Usually a medium will preside over the ritual, but it’s also possible for a non-experienced person to conduct a séance. If you’re thinking of having a séance, there are certain guidelines to follow to make the experience a good and productive one.

Invite your Guests

Decide which people you would like to invite to your séance. In order for a séance to be successful it’s very important to have guests who are open-minded to the idea of spirit communication. People who are positive, uplifting and empathetic will also inject good, receptive energy to a such a gathering. You also want to make sure all your guests get along well together, don’t have any underlying anger issues in their relationships with each other, and are not fearful or anxious about a séance. Any of these would only add disruptive, negative energy to the gathering and could hinder the success of the séance.

Establish a Purpose

Before the séance is held, all the guests should agree on a specific purpose for the gathering. For example it may be contacting a deceased friend or relative, or perhaps contacting the spirit guides of each guest. A single purpose helps raise the psychic energy of the group more efficiently.

Location

A séance should be conducted in a location that will be free from noise, disturbances and distractions. Although most people think of séances being conducted at night, you can have yours during the day if you wish. Whichever time you choose, darken the room by either dimming the lights or drawing the curtains. Light some candles to help raise the energy in the room. Have your guests sit in a circle, either in straight-back chairs, or seated at a round table.

The Séance

Give your guests some time to settle down and chat for a while before the séance begins. You may even want to serve some simple refreshments and play soft, relaxing music. This may be a no-brainer, but before the séance begins make sure everyone has their cell phones turned off. Also make sure all your guest have used the restroom beforehand, as the séance needs to be free from disruptions.

Once everyone is eventually seated in the circle, you may want to start the séance with a prayer or a brief group meditation to help everyone focus and as a way to bring protective energy to the ritual. You and your guests may hold hands, but it’s not absolutely necessary. State the purpose of the séance and ask your guests to invoke positive, loving energy. Gently encourage your guests to focus their thoughts only on the purpose of the séance and that they try to remember any thoughts, sensations or visions that come to mind, so they can be discussed after the séance.

How the séance unfolds from here depends upon the purpose you and your guests decided upon. If you’re trying to contact a deceased loved one you can ask for them by name, and request their presence in a respectful way. Once you feel the presence of a spirit, you can ask them specific questions, but always do so in a respectful and loving way. Keep your questions simple though, preferably ones that can be answered either yes or no. Their answers may be very subtle, such as a sound, sensation or a flickering of light. Individuals in the séance may also receive messages such as a memory, a brief vision or a physical sensation.

No Cause for Alarm

During a séance, it’s not all that uncommon for spirits who were not invited to make an appearance. If you or your guests start picking up on this, just let each spirit have their turn communicating their message and thank them for their visit.

However, if you pick up on an angry, hostile or malevolent spirit, don’t panic. You, or whomever is leading the séance, should simply let the spirit know they are not welcome and that it’s time for them to go. As with any other spirit, this should be said in a respectful way.

Ending the Séance

Once the séance draws to a close, usually after thirty minutes or so, be sure to thank the spirits for their presence and say goodbye to them.

Let everyone in the group come back fully to alertness at their own pace. Encourage everyone to share what they experienced and look for connections between any messages that were received.

Tips

During the séance have everyone keep their attention focused yet relaxed, which is similar to a meditative state.

Besides candles, you can also set the mood for a séance with flowers, incense or spiritual colors such as white or purple.

You can have a tape recorder or digital voice recorder running as a way to record information during the séance.

Only the designated medium should speak to the spirits.

Children should not take part in a séance.

Make sure any candles you have burning are away from curtains or other flammable objects.

By following these guidelines it can be possible to have a successful and very enjoyable séance.
