The four elements of earth, air, fire and water have been part of many spiritual beliefs since ancient times. The Greek philosopher Empedocles developed the premise that everything was formed of these four roots or elements, with the elements of fire and air reaching up and out, and the elements of earth and water reaching down and inward. Today the mystical essence of these four elements is recognized by a variety of spiritual paths including Native American beliefs and western esoteric traditions such as Wicca, Gnosticism and Hermeticism.

Each of the four elements has its own unique characteristics and energy, which can be beneficial to a person in a spiritual way but sometimes even emotionally and physically. For example, the element of water can provide physical hydration and cleansing, spiritual harmony or rejuvenation, and can also offer emotional peace and relaxation.

There are ways to invite the beneficial energy of each element into your daily life and this article will focus upon the element of earth. Ways to Connect with the Element of Earth

Forming a better connection with the element of earth can help you to feel more grounded and focused in your daily life and your spiritual practices. There are many, easy ways in which you can invite this element into your life and draw upon its energies.

  • Do a grounding meditation that focuses upon your root chakra. Or practice deep breathing exercises to help you feel more calm and connected to the earth.
  • Spend time in nature, whether it's in a park, a forest, your own backyard or any secluded natural area. Sit or recline on the ground and really feel your connection to the earth. Visualize roots reaching from your body and deep into the earth, drawing on its nourishment and peace.
  • Do any type of gardening work, whether it's planting flowers or vegetables, tending to potted plants or weeding your garden. Feel the earth in your hands and really connect to its grounding energy.
  • Bring earthy colors into your environment. Use colors such as deep green, soft browns, warm russets or burnt sienna to bring a sense of calm and nurturing stability to your home or work place. Besides colors you can also bring earthy items into your environment such as stones, plants, a small bowl or jar of sea salt, or pictures of scenes from nature.
  • Think Green and incorporate practical things into your life to honor the earth and bring its energy into your life. Recycle, use a compost bin, use earth-friendly products, walk or bike instead of driving or anything you can think of to protect and show respect for the earth.
  • Play a percussion instrument such as a drum, xylophone or rattle. Even if you're not musically inclined, playing any of these instruments can be a good creative outlet and connect you to the energy of the earth.

There is a lot of wisdom and guidance that can be found within the element of earth. Take time each day to connect with the healing and calming energy of the earth for greater spiritual enrichment.
