Bach flower remedies are a specific group of flower essences that were created by Dr. Edward Bach. These essences are a type of vibrational medicine that can clear away subconscious, emotional roadblocks and help you get in better touch with your inner spirit.

Dr. Edward Bach was a physician who worked as a surgeon and general practitioner in London. During this time he also worked in pathology, bacteriology and homeopathic medicine. But even though he enjoyed success in his medical career, he began to grow dissatisfied. He felt that traditional medicine spent too much time focusing on diseases while ignoring the people who were being treated. Through his research during this time he also came to believe that certain personality types and emotional patterns contributed to physical illness. Because of these feelings he eventually left his medical practice in 1930 and spent his time developing a new healing technique based on the energies of flowers. These became known as Bach Flower Remedies.

The Origins of Bach Flower Remedies

Dr. Bach set about developing healing remedies that were based on an intuitive rather than scientific process. Using his own psychic and healing gifts, he would tune into the healing energy of flowers during the spring and summer months. His belief was that morning sunlight passing through dewdrops on the flower petals would draw out the flower's healing properties. These properties would then be contained within the droplets of water. He would collect the dewdrops in the morning, mix them with a brandy base and create a tincture that would then be taken internally. Eventually he modified this process by suspending flowers in spring water and placing them in full sunlight for several hours.

During his relatively brief lifetime, Dr. Bach researched and created thirty eight flower remedies that bear his name to this day. These remedies are produced at the Dr. Edward Bach Centre, more commonly known as Mount Vernon or the Bach Centre, located in Oxfordshire, England.

How the Remedies Work

Rather than treating a specific medical complaint, the flower remedies are said to work by clearing negative emotions and feelings that can become repressed within us. As these are cleared and released, relief can be found at a spiritual, emotional and even physical level. This is done by tuning into a person's individual emotional and spiritual needs, then creating a subtle shift in the body's energy field.

The aim of each of the flower remedies is to enhance positive energy and emotions rather than suppressing anything negative. For example, if you have a fear of failure and are lacking in confidence the appropriate remedy will work toward increasing your confidence and help remove fears that hold you back.

Working at a Spiritual Level

Although they are taken internally, Bach flower remedies should not be confused with herbal remedies which work toward healing at a more physiological level. Instead, Bach flower remedies help by releasing negative energy and allowing healing to take place at a subtler, spiritual level.  When used in relation with the chakras, they can work with the positive energies of each chakra and bring them into better balance. This ties in with an individual's energy field, which Bach flower remedies help to purify and strengthen.

BlissI use these regularly, usually Cherry Plum, Rescue Remedy and Clematis and find that they do make a difference. They help me to be more grounded and focused. And my crown chakra is more open and receptive when using Bach Flower.
