For many of us, prayer is an important part of daily life. It’s a way to communicate with the Divine, offer thanksgiving and lift the spirit. But at times those prayers may start to feel a bit stale, or leave you feeling a little empty. During those times it can be good to try new ways of praying. Ways that will energize your prayer life and strengthen your connection with the Divine. Here are some ideas to help you get started.

Centering Prayer

This type of prayer can be traced back to several books published by three Trappist monks in the 1970’s. It’s a form of contemplative prayer that was influenced by the meditation techniques of Buddhism. Centering prayer is a way to quiet the thoughts that often make us feel distanced from the Divine, and create a state of open, loving consciousness. To take part in centering prayer, you would do the following.

Find a quiet place where you can sit without being disturbed for at least 15 minutes. Sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes and quiet your mind.

Let a sacred word come to mind that expresses your love or connection with the Divine. This could be a word such as God, Spirit, Love, Goddess, Jesus or Shalom. Say the word silently to yourself. Let it be symbolic of the love or devotion you feel for the Divine.

Whenever intrusive thoughts or images enter your mind during this time, gently bring it back to focus with your sacred word.

Find a Different Setting

If you feel stuck in a prayer rut, sometimes all you need to do is pray in a different setting. Try praying in places you normally wouldn’t think of, such as during a morning commute, while cleaning the house, walking the dog or when you’re doing yard work. Praying in different places than you’re used to can give you a new and fresh outlook.

Pray on the Move

Pray while exercising, whether it’s walking, running, stretching or dancing. Let your spirit be in tune with the movement of your body as you pray. Offer up your thanks for the glorious gift of life.

Try Group Prayer

Sometimes praying by yourself can become dull and uninspiring. Try praying with others as a way to create new energy. You can do this by praying with friends, a church group, family members or even online.

These are just some ways to energize your prayer life and help you get inspired. Be creative, be joyful and bring some renewed energy to your prayers.
