Prana is a term often connected with the Hindu tradition and is believed to be a vital, life sustaining energy. Similar to the concept of chi or qi, pranic energy is said to flow through the body in a series of channels known as nadis. This energy will fluctuate in strength, depending upon the health of a person. However, pranic energy not only benefits one’s physical vitality but can also raise psychic and spiritual energy.
Prana can be viewed as breath, vitality or the link between the spirit and the physical body, but it is also much more than that for it flows within and around everything in life. It is an energy that sustains life and is also a vibrant manifestation of one's higher self. Keeping pranic energy flowing freely can be an essential part of maintaining a healthy spiritual life and an overall feeling of well being.
Sources of Prana
It is believed that there are various sources from where prana is drawn. These sources are approached and used in many different ways, depending upon a person's spiritual, emotional and physical needs. Some of the major sources of prana include:
Air- Prana absorbed from the air is typically done through slow, deep and rhythmic breathing. Air prana can also be absorbed through the energy centers of the body known as chakras.
Sun- This type of pranic energy is most commonly drawn by sitting outside in the sun for short periods of time or drinking water that has been sitting in direct sunlight and absorbed the energy of the sun.
Earth- Prana absorbed from the earth is done by using various grounding techniques or walking barefoot on the ground. Pranic energy from the earth can also be absorbed by eating fresh, organic vegetables, fruits and grains.
Other ways to in which to raise and free up pranic energy include reiki, yoga, meditation and prayer. These methods can greatly increase this invisible life force and help one to achieve greater inner peace and a more fulfilling spiritual life.
