Chakras are spinning energy centers or vortexes that allow energy to flow into and out of our bodies. Derived from the Sanskrit word cakra, meaning wheel or circle, chakras have been described as emanations of consciousness from a higher divine power that create portals into the human body, mind and spirit, allowing people to reach a higher level of spiritual connection. There are seven major chakras on the human body, aligning from the base of the spine to the top of the head. The chakra system is believed to have originated in India thousands of years ago, being referred to in the ancient Veda and in the Sat-Chakra-Nirupana which is a 16th century Indian yogi text.
Today chakras are often used by New Age and Alternative Medicine practitioners but they are also part of a variety of different cultures throughout the world. In Hinduism the chakras comprise an anatomy system that is part of most schools of yoga, where the kundalini is said to rise upward and pierce various centers of the body, resulting in a union with the Divine. Chinese medicine follows a similar model of chakras except it involves the circulation of qi energy in which it is believed that when any chakra is blocked an imbalance in physical and emotional health will occur. In Buddhism, it is believed that an imbalance of the chakra energies will leave a person in a continuous state of dissatisfaction. The following is a common and popular outline and explanation of the chakra system. As you will see, the seven major chakras are closely aligned with the body’s endocrine system and adrenal glands.
