Grounding, also known as earthing, is an important part of daily spiritual practice, no matter which spiritual path you may follow. Simply put, grounding creates a strong bridge between your spirit and the physical realm. It enables the spiritual energy within you to stay connected to the physical reality of the earth during meditation, prayer or magickal work, because without proper grounding you can end up feeling disconnected, unfocused and anxious. Grounding helps you to stay anchored to the earth so that your mind and spirit have more freedom to expand during your spiritual work. It also helps you to stay connected, focused and more fully in the moment during your every day life and activities. The following are some excellent methods to practice in order to stay more spiritually grounded. It’s important to practice grounding methods every day, so try the method or methods that feel the most comfortable to you. The more you practice grounding, the easier it will be until it will become.
Visualization
Visualization is one of the easiest methods of grounding. All you need to do is imagine that you are rooted to the earth. The best way to do this is to sit or lie down on the ground and close your eyes. Visualize roots coming from the base of your spine down into the earth. Breathe gently and let your body relax as you do this. Really see those roots extending down into the earth below you and holding you firmly to the earth. You can even visualize those roots as having earthy colors such as magenta, dark brown or deep green. This method can also be done while standing; just visualize the roots extending from the soles of your feet into the earth. Visualization is an excellent grounding technique to practice before meditation and can also be a meditation in itself.
Root Chakra
Working with the first or root chakra, which is connected with the element of earth, is an excellent way to help you stay more grounded and focused in your spiritual work. There are numerous ways in which you can nurture the energy of the root chakra such as
Going outside and sitting up against a tree trunk or large boulder and feeling the energy of the earth.
Working in a garden and really getting your hands into the dirt can be a simple and easy way to ground yourself and get in touch with your root chakra energy. If you don’t have an outside garden to work in then working with indoor potted plants is a good alternative.
Use essential oils that are connected with the root chakra, such as patchouli, cedar and sandalwood. You can add a few drops to your bathwater, or mix a few drops with a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil to use as a massage oil. You can also use an oil warmer to spread the grounding scent of your essential oil throughout a room or your home. Just be sure to only use pure, high quality essential oils.
Crystals and Minerals
Some crystals and minerals are helpful tools to use when it comes to grounding. The energy within them can help you to feel more focused and less scattered during your spiritual practices and your every day life. Crystals and minerals such as hematite, smoky quartz, tiger’s eye, obsidian and tourmaline are excellent for grounding. You can either meditate with the crystal, keep one on your personal altar or even carry it around it your pocket if it’s small enough.
