Making resolutions for the New Year can be a great way to motivate yourself and give your life a little extra direction. Very often these resolutions may be for goals such as losing weight or a vow to quit smoking. But there are also resolutions you can make that can greatly enrich your spiritual life. These resolutions will depend much upon your core beliefs and areas of your spiritual life on which you wish to focus.
The following are some ideas for spiritual New Year's resolutions that you may find helpful, plus important things to consider when making these resolutions.
- I will be a more forgiving person and learn to let go of anger and resentments. I will also be forgiving towards myself, and release any guilt or shame I may be holding on to, so that greater joy and compassion can enter my life.
- I will practice gratitude every day and appreciate even the smallest blessings that are in my life.
- I will learn to stay more fully in the moment, not dwelling on the past or worrying too much about the future.
- I will learn to trust more in divine timing, rather than trying to control too many aspects of my life.
- I will make an effort to see any mistakes I make as opportunities for learning and spiritual growth, than judging them as personal failures.
- I will foster greater compassion toward others, as well as myself. This means opening my heart to the fullness of life and allowing myself to give and receive divine love freely, in order to be a more awakened being.
- I will ask my Higher Self to release me from all limitations I put upon myself. The limitations that keep me from freely expressing myself as the pure, empowered and creative being that I am.
There are some important things to consider when making New Year's resolutions. First of all, don’t get bogged down with too many. Choose only one or two areas of your spiritual life you’d like enhance or change, otherwise it will end up becoming overwhelming.
Choose only those resolutions that are in line with your spiritual purpose. In other words, they should be resolutions that truly feel right to you and are in tune with your Higher Self, rather than being based on outside pressures and influences.
Don’t cling too tightly to your resolutions. This may sound counter productive at first, but it all goes back to trusting in divine timing. Spiritual growth is a fluid process, rather than one that’s fixed and linear. Learn to listen to and trust in, the guidance of your Higher Self.
