Many religions and spiritual beliefs have long emphasized the importance of gratitude as part of a well-rounded spiritual life. But sometimes it may be hard to keep that feeling of gratitude alive, especially when times are tough. However, here are simple ways that you can keep the feeling of gratitude alive in your heart and make it part of your daily life.

Research has shown that people who make gratitude exercises part of their daily life tend to be happier and healthier than those who don't. In a study done by psychologists Dr. Robert Emmons and Dr. Michael McCullough, it was found that individuals who practiced daily gratitude tended to be more alert, optimistic and have higher levels of energy. They also found that this attitude of gratitude created a positive cycle, encouraging people to show greater kindness and compassion to others.

Stop for a moment and think of something for which you are grateful and sit with the feelings it creates in you. Do you feel a stirring of happiness? Or perhaps a sense of calm and connection? This is the uplifting and healing power of gratitude.

Daily Gratitude Exercises

Think of gratitude as a plant that needs to be tended daily in order to grow and flourish. There are many ways in which you can water this garden of gratitude, but one of the easiest ways is by keeping a gratitude journal. Each day, write down the things in life that you are grateful for, no matter how small these may be. Or you can just focus on one aspect in your life for which you are thankful and write down the feelings that gratitude stirs within you.

Let the people in your life know your feelings of gratitude toward them. Write a note to a friend or family member expressing your feelings, let a co-worker know you appreciate their help, or thank a stranger for offering you a helping hand.

Practice this simple breathing exercise as a way to strengthen feelings of gratitude. Sit in a comfortable position with your feet on the floor. Breathe deeply into your abdomen for the count of 5, hold for 1 and then release the breath slowly. With each inhalation think to yourself I am blessed. With each exhalation think to yourself I am grateful. Continue this for about five minutes and feel the energy of gratitude expand within you.

Take note of things that happen during the day for which you are grateful, no matter how small they may be. This can be an especially good reality check whenever you're feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Take time each day to get in touch with the things you are thankful for as you honor the many blessings in life.
