At times, the worries, hectic pace and obligations of life can leave you feeling emotionally and spiritually depleted. If you find you're starting to feel this way, you may be due for a spiritual retreat. But don't worry about having to dish out a lot of money or travel a long distance in order to gain some spiritual peace. A personal, spiritual retreat is closer than you think.
Create a Home Retreat
Set aside some time just for yourself, whether it be a weekend, a day, or just a few hours. Make this time as free from distractions as possible. Let people know that you don't want to be disturbed during that time, turn off your cell phone and stay away from your laptop or television as much as possible.
Devote this time to things that will bring you a deep sense of spiritual connection. Depending upon your spiritual path and beliefs, you can do such things as meditation, yoga, prayer, mandala drawings, a gratitude ritual, watching an inspirational DVD, or reading from spiritual texts. Taking care of your body is also a way to nurture your spirit so add some healthy or pampering activities too. This can include a long walk, a relaxing bath using your favorite aromatic oil or, if your budget allows, an in-home massage. Be sure to nourish your body by eating healthy meals and drinking plenty of water. Make the most of this time and let it be a relaxing and fulfilling experience.
Get Away from it All
At times, stepping out of your daily environment can be beneficial to the spirit. It can help you distance your mind from anxieties and allow you to see things from a new, fresh perspective. This get-away can be as simple as spending an hour in a park reading an uplifting book, stepping into a church to spend time in quiet reflection, going to a group meditation class or having a Reiki session.
If you're an outdoor person you can create a camping retreat, either on your own or with a group of friends. If your budget allows, you can book a room at your favorite Bed & Breakfast or a local hotel. Create an atmosphere that's conducive to spiritual tranquility, much as you would on a home retreat.
Mini Retreats
These quick, easy retreats are a way to keep grounded or find spiritual refreshment whenever you feel it's necessary. They can be done nearly anywhere at anytime and can include such things as:
Deep breathing
- Repeating a positive, uplifting affirmation to yourself
- Closing your eyes and visualizing yourself in a beautiful, calm environment
- Writing in your spiritual journal
- Holding a favorite crystal and drawing on its positive energy
- Taking care of your spiritual self in these ways helps you to feel centered, aware and better able to handle the stresses of life. As you can see, a retreat does not have to be a complicated or expensive endeavor, so take the time to give yourself the gift of a personal spiritual retreat.
