Part of our journey through this life involves not only growing mentally and emotionally, but also spiritually. Although spiritual growth can fall under various definitions, in general it’s all about getting in better touch with your higher self and developing greater spiritual awareness. Here are five ways in which you can gain spiritual growth and thus have a more fulfilling life.

Choose a Good Attitude

Having a good attitude doesn’t mean you need to be happy all the time, or deny painful feelings such as sadness or anger. What it does mean is choosing the best attitude to have, how you respond to situations in life, and how you view life in general. While you don’t have control over everything that happens in your life, you do have control over how you respond. You can choose to respond in a positive way, or a negative way. Developing a consistently positive attitude takes practice, but some things that help include:

  • Cutting back on negative responses you give to others. Choosing responses that are more positive and understanding

  • Reducing negative self-talk

  • Taking stock of what you are thankful for in life

  • Allowing yourself to do things you enjoy

Learn to Let Go

Learning to let go means releasing attachments in your life that serve no purpose and become a drain on your spirit. This can mean learning ways to let go of resentments, blame, anger and regrets. Letting go can be ending unhealthy relationships or distancing yourself from people who are habitually negative. Learning to let go can also mean releasing fear and learning to trust. Although fear is a normal, and sometimes helpful emotion, allowing it to take hold of your life hinders your spiritual growth and creates a self-defeating pattern.

Learn to Accept Change

Even though change can be scary, it’s part of life and is necessary for spiritual growth. Without change valuable learning opportunities are missed, and life can become stagnant and dull. It’s okay to feel some trepidation when changes occur in your life, but don’t let that caution turn into full-blown fear. Trust in the process and see changes that come your way as new opportunities for further growth.

Don’t Play the Blame Game

When we make mistakes, or have problems in life, it’s easy to place blame on other people or on circumstances. But this pattern of thinking can get you stuck in a victim mentality, and keeps you from learning important lessons. Avoid the temptation of blaming others for your mistakes, and learn to take responsibility for them, without being hard on yourself. Understand that mistakes are all part of the learning and growing process of life. When problems arise in life, see them for what they are rather than finding blame for the situation. Brainstorm for solutions to the problem, and see the situations as a valuable learning opportunity.

Know your Soul Purpose

Soul purpose is the expression of your true essence, your soul, in a way that benefit’s the world around you. It’s the light of your spirit that ‘s expressed through your own unique talents, positive attitudes and values. Each of us has reasons for being here, gifts to offer and ways that we can make the world a better, more positive place. Discover your own soul purpose by thinking about the things you have to offer, values you wish to share, and ways in which you can bring light and love to the world.

Spiritual growth is an ongoing process that often entails a certain amount of trial and error. Each day be aware of traps you may fall in that hinder your growth, while fostering positive, uplifting ways to express the true light of your spirit.
