Going on a vacation and not sure what you absolutely need to take with you? These five travel items are a must if you are going anywhere. Do not leave home without them!
Medical Insurance Ok so you are not planning on getting sick on your vacation, but what if you do? Medical treatment can be costly and if you do not have enough money to pay for it when it is required you are not going to get it. So buy medical insurance. You never know when you might need it. What if you are in an accident or break a leg or catch something like the swine flu? With adequate medical insurance you will be guaranteed proper medical treatment in a good medical facility as well as transportation home if needed.
Hand Sanitizer
Remember what your mom said about washing your hands? Well she was right. Even the World Health Organization recommends you take hand sanitizer with you and use it regularly as it will help prevent the spread of disease and you don’t want to catch anything on your holidays especially if you didn’t buy adequate medical insurance. You should also bring a roll biodegradable of toilet paper. You can buy small rolls in most travel stores or just take the inside out of a regular roll.

Zip Lock Bags
These handy little bags are a traveler’s best friend. They come in all sizes from small sandwich bags to the large ones perfect for dirty laundry. Properly sealed they are water and leak proof. Put you shampoo and other liquid products in zip lock bags to prevent leakage, keep you camera in one to prevent it from getting wet. The X large ones are great for keeping your cloths dry in the rain and compressed they will help save space in your suitcase or backpack.
A Towel and Face Cloth
“The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy” had it right, always bring your own towel. I want to add face cloth to that. In many countries hotels will not supply a face cloth and if you are traveling on a budget you might not get a towel either. If you have long hair, like I do, you can always use an extra towel. The new microfiber towels are fantastic, they are light weight, absorbent and dry quickly.
A Camera
Digital cameras are great. They are small and easy to pack and you can take hundreds of pictures on a small memory card. So take a camera with you to record your journey and a journal to write down all the places you visited and the things you have seen as well as where and what your photos are of. Make sure you know how to use your camera. If not bring a photocopy of the manual. You will also need an extra battery, the battery charger and a couple of memory cards. Switch out the cards regularly so that if one card gets lost or damaged you don’t loose all of your photos.
Other items you should not leave home without include your passport (that’s a no brainer), money and credit or debit cards, emergency phone numbers for medical emergencies, stolen credit cards, embassies, and photocopies of all your documents like your passport, credit cards, travel documents etc. Keep these separate from the originals and if they are stolen this will make it easier to have them replaced or canceled. A travel alarm is also useful as is an electricity adaptor or converter, especially if you are traveling to a country that uses a different voltage than you have at home. A portable cloths line and clothe pegs are also handy as is bio-suds, a bio degradable laundry soap that can be used to bath with if you are desperate.
So on your next trip don’t leave home without these essential travel items such as adequate medical insurance, hand sanitizer, a roll of toilet paper, Zip lock bags, a towel and face cloth, your camera and accessories, a travel journal and proper documentation.
