Ever stayed in a place that made the hair stand up on the back of your neck or gave you the creeps when you entered the room? There are plenty of hotels in the United States that claim to be haunted but are there really ghosts in the rooms or are they just a figment of people’s imaginations? Many places claim to be home to America’s most haunted hotel but there appears to be several haunted hotels in New Orleans French Quarter including the Hotel Provincial and Le Pavilion Hotel. Both of these hotels were voted into the top ten haunted hotels in America.
As many of the building in New Orleans French Quarter are very old it is not unexpected that some of them could be haunted. The Hotel Provincial was once a confederate hospital and the ghosts of soldiers and are said to walk the halls seeking help. Several visitors have experienced paranormal encounters while staying there. Guests at Le Pavilion Hotel have heard strange noises and seen shadowy figures standing at the foot of their beds. This hotel is supposed to be one of the most haunted in New Orleans. Other haunted hotels include the Bourbon Orleans Hotel, the Hotel Monteleone and the Dauphine Orleans Hotel.
The Grand Hotel in Jerome Arizona claims to be the most haunted hotel in America. Once a hospital, this hotel, located in an abandoned mining town is said to have “death rooms” where patients were left to die and now their ghosts come back to haunt visitors. But it is not just the hotel that is haunted; Jerome is also claims to be America’s largest and most haunted ghost town attracting large numbers of ghost hunters at Halloween.
Another ghost town that claims to have several haunted hotels is Deadwood South Dakota. The Franklin Hotel is just one of the several hotels in town that has guests that just won’t leave. The Bullock hotel is haunted by its original owner and former US Marshal, Seth Bullock. The Chinese opium tunnels that run under the city are also said to be haunted. Today Deadwood is known for its casinos but the legacy of the gold rush still haunts the historic buildings of Main Street.
One of America’s best known haunted hotels is the Stanley Hotel located in Estes Park Colorado. This is where Stephen King wrote part of his novel “The Shining”. The hotel is said to be haunted by children playing in the halls and the original owners, F.O. and Flora Stanley who still entertain guests on a regular basis. Room 418 is supposed to be the most haunted room in the hotel but King wrote his novel in room 217.
Another haunted hotel is the ocean liner the Queen Mary which has been moored in Long Beach California since 1967. Ghosts of former crew members who died on the ship are said to be seen frequently and the swimming pool is the ships most haunted area. There are haunted hotels located all over America. New Orleans French Quarter is home to several haunted hotels and ghost town Jerome, Arizona claims to have the most haunted hotel in the country while Deadwood, South Dakota hosts the ghosts of former residents including Wild Bill Hickok. The Stanley Hotel gained fame as the setting for Stephen Kings’ novel "The Shining" and the Queen Mary is a floating ghost ship.
