Want to take a holiday but are on a limited budget? If you are looking for a place where your dollar still goes a long way you will find that there are still several destinations that are a good value for the failing American dollar.

Eastern Europe is still an affordable destination. Offering everything the major European cities have at a fraction of the price, many Eastern European cities are gems waiting to be discovered. Since many eastern block countries have joined the European Union the long waits at the border are gone and visiting is easier than ever. Some use the Euro as their currency but many Eastern European countries are still using their own currency.

Poland is an affordable and interesting country that is convenient to visit. Warsaw and Krakow are ancient cities full of fascinating history and historical sites. Visit century’s old castles and palaces, historic churches of all denominations, one of the many national parks or tour a salt mine. Shopping is good, the hotels reasonably priced, the people are friendly and you don’t need a visa to visit.

Bulgaria is not touristy as much of Eastern European but it is a very safe country to visit and is still a bargain as well. With the Black Sea beaches and mineral spas attracting the health conscious and several UNESCO heritage sites that include monasteries, ancient tombs and a Rock Church, Bulgaria is well worth visiting. Bulgaria has four airports, several sea ports and train access as well. Four and five star hotels are available in Sofia, the countries capital, for less than 100 Euros per night at bargain compared to most cities in Western Europe.

Hungry is another up and coming destination that is still reasonably priced and not too crowded. Budapest is a great city full of culture, history and art nouveau architecture. It is also very affordable. Considered to be “one of the most important cultural centers of Europe” Budapest is actually two cities, Buda and Pest, located across the river from each other. Hungary also has some very good spas and hot springs that are good value for your money.

Eastern Europe is still a very affordable travel destination. Less crowded than many major European cities and just as interesting, these cities are hidden treasures offering excellent value for your tourist dollar. So instead of visiting Western Europe, try the East, your money will go further and you will see a part of Europe that has yet to be over visited and over commercialized.
