During A dvent, the four weeks leading up to Christmas, a tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages occurs as this is when the annual Christmas markets are held in some of Europe’s oldest cities.

The original Christmas markets began in the early 15th century in Germany and Austria. Normally held in a town square or pedestrian zones near the city center the markets contain booths selling seasonal items, food and beverages. Today there are dozens of markets in Germany, France and Austria that attract millions of visitors every holiday season.

Nativity scenes, nutcrackers, mulled wine and Christmas decorations are just some of the things you can expect to find at a traditional market. While France, Austria and Germany have the most Christmas markets of all the European countries, Christmas markets can be found all over Europe. Each of the markets will be unique yet similar. They have an old world feel and are seeped in centuries old tradition.

Some of the best markets are in Vienna, Austria. Vienna is home to 25 markets, many located in the cities historic center. The markets open around November 15th and stay open until December 24th. Enjoy the festive season by feasting on roasted chestnuts at the market in front of city hall or visit the Schonbrunn Palace market and take in a concert or view the nativity scene.

The Strasbourg market is one of France’s largest and oldest Christmas markets. It has been open since 1570. Located in Alsace on the border between France and Germany this market is spread out around the city and has all the traditional Christmas fare, including photo opportunities with St. Nick.

A great market to visit in Germany is in Dresden. This market has been operating since 1434 and is located in the historical part of the city centre. Shop for hand made crafts, unique carvings and blown glass ornaments or enjoy some of the cities culinary specialties such as Pflaumentoffel (dried prunes in the shape of a chimney sweep). The Dresden Christmas market is also home to the world’s largest Christmas pyramid and nutcracker.

So if you are looking for a unique shopping opportunity or just want to experience the traditional historic atmosphere of a Christmas market why not plan you next European vacation during advent and enjoy the ambience of a Christmas Market in a historic city.
