Take Tango lessons and dance your holiday away. Or if you prefer to watch instead of participate, you can visit the market in San Telmo and see the tango dancers practicing their art in the streets or take in a tango show at one of the local Tango venues located in the barrios of Monserrat and San Telmo. Tango is the dance of Argentina and watching the tango is just as good as dancing one.
Considered to be Buenos Aires most prestigious address for both the living and dead, this cemetery is worth a visit. Everyone goes to see Evita (Eva) Peron’s grave but Recoleta is really a who’s who of Argentinean history. Called the “City of Angels” the cemetery resembles a small city. The tombs and mausoleums are very elaborate and ornate and are said to look like early 20th century architecture of Buenos Aires. There are spectacular statues adorning the crypts and tombs that make this cemetery more of a museum of sculpture than a final resting place for the dead.
3. Go shopping on Florida Street
Buenos Aires famous pedestrian mall is over one mile long (1.6 km) and runs north to south. It is a great place to buy leather goods; jackets, handbags, shoes, wallets. Take a stroll down the street and shop your way to Galerias Pacifico, which is an architectural and historic landmark that has been converted into an upscale shopping mall.
4. Eat at Café Tortoni
Tuxedo clad waiters, upholstered chairs, marble tables, wood paneled walls adorned with portraits of famous Argentinean people combined with good food make this historic cafe a great place to dine or have a coffee and people watch.
5. Visit Plaza de Mayo
Located in the heart of Buenos Aires historical center, over the years Plaza de Mayo has been the site of numerous protests and political demonstrations including those of the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo who march every Thursday at 3:30 pm seeking information on their missing loved ones. Make a stop at the Museo de la Casa de Gobierna and then take a tour of the pink presidential palace, the Casa Rosada, made famous by the Peron’s.
