If you are looking for a winter break and want to soak up some sun and enjoy the beach, the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico is the place for you. The scenic Caribbean coast in Mexico offers first class resorts situated on sandy beaches. The weather is warm and dry in the winter and the highly developed tourist industry can cater to all your needs. The only problem you might have is choosing a resort town.
If you are interested in archeological ruins and Mexican history, the Yucatan is a great place to stay. You can take a day trip to the Mayan ruins at Tulum, a large fortress on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean or visit Chichen-Itza, the ruins of a post classic Mayan city complete with pyramids, temples and ancient ball courts. The resort cities of Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Tulum all feature miles of sandy beaches, wonderful hotels, great restaurants, exciting nightlife, water sports and super shopping.
Cancun is the largest center on the Yucatan Peninsula and is home to the international airport. It has been described as a “modern mega resort” with over 20,000 hotel rooms, 350 restaurants and nightclubs, and a dozen shopping malls to cater to everyone’s budget and tastes. The warm Caribbean ocean and white sandy beaches, turquoise water and outstanding variety of things to do make Cancun a tropical paradise.
Further along the Mayan Riviera you will find Playa del Carmen, a much quieter more relaxed resort town than Cancun. It is a great place to lie on the beach or beside the pool and escape from everything. You can take in many of the water sports offered in the area such a scuba diving, snorkeling, or fishing. Playa del Carmen is located in the center of the Mayan Rivera and is a short bus ride from Cancun or Tulum. It offers all the amenities of the area with a more laid back atmosphere than cosmopolitan Cancun.
Cozumel is located on an island just 12 miles (19 kms) off shore from Playa del Carmen. A short ferry ride will take to you a tropical paradise famous for its coral reefs and world class diving. You could say Cozumel has it all; beaches, water sports including diving, snorkeling sailing, excellent restaurants, and Mayan ruins. If you run out things to do on the island, the mainland is just a short boat ride away.
Where ever you decide to stay on the Yucatan, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum or Cozumel, you will find a wide selection of activities to keep you busy. Whether you lie by the pool, shop, visit ancient Mayan ruins, scuba dive, snorkel, deep sea fish, or take an adventure tour, or just go with the flow, the Yucatan is a great place to vacation in Mexico.
