Harmful chemicals in cosmetics
I'm concerned about what I'm hearing in the news--lead in lipstick, phthalates in nailpolish and fragrances. Is there some way of finding out which cosmetics are safe? I'm particularly concerned about my daughters because some of the chemicals cause birth defects.

Harmful Chemicals in Make Up
I agree with you! It is scary and sadly it is a little difficult to know which companies are safe and which are not. The FDA is doing very little in the way of helping consumers be safe. The Organic Consumer Association has a nice "Buying Guide" page. http://organicconsumers.org/btc/BuyingGuide.cfm They list "certified green products". So they will hopefully be safe for you and the environment. A lot of the companies listed have web pages so you can order stuff online.

You can also go to http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ and search for your favorite cosmetics to find out if they have anything harmful in them--they probably do. There is a document called the "Compact for Safe Cosmetics." If you go to http://www.safecosmetics.org/ you can see a list of the progressive companies that have signed this document which pledges that they won't use harmful chemistry in their products. DrRon
