The liver's role in diabetes

Hi Dr.Ron. I've been reading your articles with great interest, and really like your approach to natural health. Thank you! I have read and heard a bit about how the liver is often ignored when managing diabetes. I have controlled my diabetes through diet and exercise successfully for a year now. My doctor is very very pleased. So am I, for that matter! I used to wake up with high bg readings, and was told that basically my liver was dumping glucose into my system overnight to compensate for dropping bg levels. With a snack before bed, I now wake up with normal readings. My snack, believe it or not, is literally a single bite of a healthy protein bar, or a spoon of peanutbutter on a wheat cracker. Nothing more, and it works like a charm for me. My absolute interest in the function of the liver is definitely piqued, as you can imagine. Neither my doctor nor my diabetes educator (pardon me for not singing his praises..) seem to want to even talk about what is happening and they only focus on the pancrease. Am I completely wrong in thinking that there really is a connection between the liver and the pancreas in diabetes? I apologize for being long winded. :)

The Role of the Liver in Diabetes

I think the liver has a role in almost everything that happens in our bodies, but I certainly don't understand its role. Medical science has found over 500 functions in the liver but I don't think anyone claims to have found them all. I think your case is an excellent example of a patient doing intelligent experiments with what works in their unique body to solve a problem. I would continue to experiment with small changes as your body improves with age. Here's a link to a University of California site that discusses the role of the liver in sugar levels--http://www.deo.ucsf.edu/type2/understanding-diabetes/how-the-body-processes-sugar/the-liver-and-blood-sugar.HTML

Anyway, liver is one of the largest organs in our body that's why it helps a lot to keep us in good health. And there's a lot herbal medicine you can take just to keep your liver protected to any risk and to live longer.
