Party Conversation Starters

We've all heard the worst party conversation starters and we may even have done a few ourselves. I once was so desperate to end an awkward silence at a dinner party that I blurted out, "So, did you hear about the guy who was so fat he couldn't leave his house?" I would tell you what the reaction was, but I've blocked it from my conscious memory.

But what are the best party conversation starters? Do you have any good conversation starters for parties, dinners and get-togethers? What are the topics that get people talking, listening, laughing and enjoying the party?

Share them with us! (Some of us need them, desperately!)

I have an idea....

I once saw a show that showed how people can start conversations. If there is anyone new in the group, you should say "Jim, this is Frank. Frank is an instructor at..." and always tell a little bit about the what the person does or something interesting about them, like "Frank owns a bed and breakfast. Jim, didn't you say you and your wife were going on vacation? Have you ever stayed at a B&B?" It triggers two sides of the conversation.

For me, I always like to talk about new local restaurants we've tried. People like to talk about food. When I'm absolutely desperate to get a conversation going at a party, and things are quiet, I'll bring up something really strange I heard. Like something to do with the paranormal and say "isn't that the wierdest? C'mon, you believe in ghosts, right?" I don't know why, but the paranormal and ghosts always gets people talking!

It's about the food...

I try a new dish when I have company. I then ask what people thought of the dish and ask them if they tried anything new. You know people love to talk about food!
