Professional Writing

Heather has been writing for a variety of publications for more than 20 years, beginning as editor/owner of a weekly tabloid in the agricultural community where she and her family farmed in western Canada. Since then she has written for ethnic, health, real estate, travel, agricultural and web-based publications, averaging 130 articles a year.

Heather is a proud member of the Writers' Guild of Alberta, The Edmonton Arts Council and the Professional Writers Association of Canada.

Getting to know Heather

She and her husband raised three daughters and have six grandchildren. Over the years she took distance learning courses from Athabasca University and earned a bachelor of arts degree in sociology.

Heather is a morning person and starts writing before 6:00 am, freeing up her evenings for her other passion, which is teaching music. She credits a language instructor in high school for inspiring her to pursue a writing career and enjoys a zest for life that sees a story in everyone.

  In 1976, a group of freelance writers began to meet to discuss ways of improving working conditions and rates for writers in Canada's magazine and newspaper industries. Their discussions led to the foundation of the Periodical Writers Association of Canada (PWAC), a nation-wide non-profit organization that has played a leading role in the industry ever since.
  
  In 2005, PWAC became the Professional Writers Association of Canada, reflecting the broader professional interests of approximately 600 members across the country.
